A Griffith man has been charged in Lake Superior Court with carjacking, robbery resulting in bodily injury, criminal confinement and resisting law enforcement in a Sunday carjacking in Schererville.
Sabri Ibraham Amara, 24, of the 1400 block of North Wood Street, is charged with carjacking a 2012 Ford Escape. The victim told police she was asleep in the passenger seat early on Sunday in the parking lot at Buddy and Pal’s in Schererville, waiting for her boyfriend, when she awoke and saw someone she didn’t know in the driver’s seat.
The man, later identified as Amara, drove north on U.S. 41 form U.S. 30, then pulled into a car dealership. The woman grabbed the keys, turned off the car and threw the keys on the floor and told the man to get out of the car, but he went for the keys, grabbed the woman’s arm to keep her form getting them, then ripped them out of her hand and started the car.
The woman said she got out of the car and Amara pulled away.
At about 2:43 a.m., police saw a blue SUV speeding as it traveled west on 67th Avenue. Police followed the car, which was driving without its headlights on, until it made a sharp turn onto Industrial Drive. When the officer caught up with the SUV, the driver was gone and the vehicle had severe front-end damage and the airbags were deployed. No other cars were in the area.
Police found Amara across the street from his apartment.
The woman suffered a bruise on her arm, scratches to her back and neck and cuts on the back of her ear, left hand and fingers.
