INDIANAPOLIS — A bill that will start a summer study of the structure of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District passed the House Tuesday with an 87-3 vote.
The bill is authored by State Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon, D-Munster, and is an attempt to address concerns of under representation for Lake County commuters.
Reardon said the structure of the NICTD board has led to a stall on the West Lake corridor rail line that would connect communities such as Munster, St. John and Lowell to the South Shore.
State Rep. Ed Soliday, R-Valparaiso, offered compliments to Reardon, saying the bill attempts to tackle a “very complicated issue.”
The bill will move to the Senate, sponsored by Sens. Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso, and Sue Landske, R-Cedar Lake.
