GARY — The city is hosting a Vacant to Vibrant forum Thursday to talk about green revitalization efforts. It will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Aquatorium, 6918 Oak Ave. in Marquette Park.
The forum will introduce green infrastructure projects taking place in Gary and announce different ways residents can become involved. Green infrastructure uses natural landscapes to manage stormwater, reduce flooding and create healthier urban environments.
Forum topics will include: repurposing lands using green infrastructure; the Marquette Park Lagoon Stormwater Management project; brownfield cleanup and redevelopment efforts; Sheraton Hotel demolition and reuse plans; rain barrel and green infrastructure workshop opportunities.
Gary is a participant in the Urban Waters Federal Partnership Initiative that aims to reduce the number of combined sewer overflows, which discharge untreated waste water into the Grand Calumet and Little Calumet rivers during heavy rainfall.
