Gary man charged in stabbing
Aggravated battery and criminal confinement charges have been filed in Lake Superior Court against a Gary man charged in a stabbing in East Chicago.
Anthony M. Almodovar, 48, attacked a man as he was letting a friend inside an apartment building at about 10 p.m. Feb. 27 in the 500 block of West 151st Street. The victim told police Almodovar seemed drunk or high and accused him of chasing kids and being a pedophile. When the victim tried to reason with Almodovar, he became enraged and poked at the victim with a screwdriver, then tried to force him inside an empty first-floor apartment. Almodovar punched the man in the face and kept repeating that he was the “Black Avenger” before he pulled out a knife, stabbed him in the in the abdomen and poked him in the neck with the screwdriver.
The victim ran halfway up the stairs when Almodovar cut him on the hand. The man managed to break free and called 911, but Almodovar tried to break into the man’s apartment.
The man was taken to St. Catherine Hospital and transferred to Advocate Christ Hospital in Illinois for treatment of multiple stab wounds to his abdomen, chest, left arm and hand.
Each of the charges is punishable by a sentence of six to 20 years.
