Investigation Discovery is kicking off its series “Nightmare Next Door” on Tuesday with a program on the murder of 8-year-old Sarah Paulson, who was killed in 1995 when she went out to ride her bicycle.
Her body was found about 200 feet from her home in a wooded area. She had been strangled and sexually assaulted. Her killing kept the city on edge for months.
Ten weeks later, Portage police arrested Eugene Britt and charged him with her murder. Britt later confessed to 11 killings in Lake County and was charged with six murders. He’s serving a life sentence for Sarah Paulson’s killing and 245 years in prison for the other deaths.
Although Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter sought the death penalty, a judge ruled Britt was ineligible because he was mentally retarded.
The segment, to be shown at 8 p.m. airs on the Investigation Discovery channel.
It features interviews with Patty Paulson, Sarah’s mother; retired Portage police officials David Reynolds and Terry Swickard; Porter County Prosecutor Brian Gensel; and former Chicago Tribune reporter Pam Cytrynbaum.
