GARY — Three new members joined the Gary Sanitary Board of Commissioners Monday.
They are businessman Vance Kenney, Sharon Mallory, who runs a Chicago investment firm, and retiree Ola Morris. All three were appointed by Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.
Richard Comer will continue to serve as president of the board. The new members replace Harlee Currie, Charles W. Jackson Jr. and Cynthia Watts.
The new board awarded a $47,828 contract to Havel, of South Bend, for the installation of new piping for its raw sewage pumping system.
GSD Executive Director Dan Vicari said the old steel piping system was more than 50 years old. The piping has become corroded and brittle and it’s experiencing several leaks that had to be patched.
He said the piping is integral to the operation of GSD’s wastewater treatment plant. Pressure could cause the piping to fail at any time, he said.
Vicari said the funding would come from GSD’s capital improvement fund.
