GARY — Hearings will be held next month at Ball State University for two charter schools that are in danger of losing their charters from the university.
The hearing for the LEAD College Preparatory Charter School is April 3 and the hearing for Charter School of the Dunes is April 24. Both hearings begin at 9 a.m. on the BSU campus in Muncie.
Ball State announced in January it was pulling the charters of the two Gary schools, along with five others across the state, because of insufficient academic performance.
Each hearing will take several hours. The charter schools will make their case before a three-member panel and Ball State will provide its reasons behind the nonrenewals. There will be a question-and-answer period for the panel and a 15-minute final-comment period for each side. The panel will then make a recommendation to Ball State President Jo Ann M. Gora.
If the contracts are not renewed, they will expire June 30.
If the two charters don’t find sponsors, the city would shift from eight to five charter schools.
West Gary Lighthouse withdrew its charter renewal application and will close in June. The school, however, plans to merge three Lighthouse high schools into one building.
