GARY — A Miller resident thought a man in a blue Ford was “casing” the neighborhood and made a mental note.
When he saw the car return, the neighbor grabbed his video camera and recorded the suspect breaking into a house in the 400 block of N. Knox Street about 9:45 a.m. Wednesday.
As a result, police were able to identify the burglar, who returned the stolen items on Thursday after admitting to the break-in, Sgt. Brian Farrow said.
“We couldn’t have solved this case without the neighbor’s help,” Farrow said.
The watchful neighbor called police, who arrived and discovered a door to the home had been forced open.
A resident provided details of the items taken from the home.
The recording shows the burglar parking on the street, entering the home, then carrying two computers back to his car.
A clear view of the man’s face was visible, allowing police to make a quick identification.
Farrow questioned the man, who was released Thursday but expected to present burglary charges to the Lake County prosecutor sometime next week.
Farrow said he believes the suspect may be involved in other similar crimes.
