Teen accused of sex with 11-year-old
A 19-year-old Gary man has been charged in Lake Superior Court with child molesting involving an 11-year-old girl.
Leventes A. Strong, of 1803 W. 39th Court, faces six to 20 years if convicted of the charge, which was filed after the girl told authorities she had been molested since age six or seven. The girl initially confided in a cousin that Strong had been fondling her and engaged in sex with her while she was visiting a relative in Gary.
Toddler found outside only in jeans
A neglect of a dependent charge has been filed against a Gary woman whose 2-year-old child was found outside early one December morning wearing only a pair of jeans.
Tierra Danyale McHenry, 23, of 2471 Central Ave., told police she’d gone down to the corner for a cigarette. Child Protective Services authorities took custody of all of McHenry’s children.
Early on Dec. 22, a woman living in the same block told police she was awakened by the sound of a child crying and asked her husband to check on the noise. They brought the child inside form the cold, put some of their grandchild’s clothes on the boy and gave him something to eat. While the woman was holding and rocking the child, she told police noticed a small burn on his head.
The charge is punishable by a maximum three-year sentence.
Woman taking booze cut worker
A woman slashed a Gary pharmacy employee after he caught her trying to steal liquor, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Kevin Bradley was working at Fagan Pharmacy at 5001 U.S. 20 Thursday morning when he noticed a woman enter the store. The woman fit the description of someone who had stolen alcohol from the store the day before, so he watched her as she moved around. He eventually saw her pick up an alcohol bottle and later slip it in her sleeve. Bradley then stopped her as she tried to leave and told her to sit as he filled out trespassing paperwork. Jones instead cut his left eye with what appeared to be an old can opener. He was able to handcuff her.
She now faces charges of theft and battery by means of a deadly weapon.
