GARY — A man found dead inside a burning garage Sunday night died from a gunshot wound, police said Tuesday.
The victim remains unidentified, police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
The man was burned in the fire and police recovered no identification, but said he appears to be black.
King said a caller reported the fire, but then cancelled the request believing the fire was out.
Then police received reports of gunfire and that the garage was “fully engulfed,” King said.
Firefighters responded to 554 Taft St., in the Ambridge-Mann neighborhood, about 7 p.m. and found the garage behind the vacant home on fire.
They later found the man’s body inside. Gary Fire Department investigators and the Indiana State Fire Marshal were at the scene to determine the cause of the blaze, which appears to have been intentionally set.
Fire Chief Teresa Everett deflected questions about the case, saying Gary police are investigating.
Results of an autopsy completed Monday showed the man had been shot.
Violent Crimes Detective Lorenzo Davis is investigating the homicide. Anyone with information can call him at 881-4738.
