HIGHLAND – The first time Danielle Hedges walked the 39.3 mile Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in 2008, she had blisters for heels by the end of the first day.

But she put her shoes back on best she could, finished the walk and looks forward to doing it all over again June 1-2 in Chicago. But first, she and partner Joanne Adams Lane will need to get through the Rock Your Bra Off, a local live-band extravaganza the two devised to help them raise the entry fee that’s grown enrmously since its inception.

While neither have been affected by breast cancer, Lane’s brother, area musician Jack Adams, beat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and Hedges’ niece had recently been diagnosed with leukemia when the two decided they would do the Avon Walk at a Super Bowl party in 2008.

Then they discovered that in order to participate, they would have to come up wit $1,800 apiece, which was doable but daunting. Hedges’ husband, Aaron Hedges of popular Northwest Indiana band The Crawpuppies, had participated in enough benefits to know exactly what to do, she said.

The first RYBO was held at Stadium Sports Bar and Grill in Dyer, with iconic band Bravo Johnny kicking off the evening. It quickly outgrew those digs and was moved to Growlers the next year.

Growlers owner Myron Chapman was more than happy to pitch in and will now walk with Hedges’ and Lanes’ team of 10, appropriately named “Walk Your Bras Off.”

“The event is a fantastic support system for women,” Chapman said, “We’re helping women who’re friends of mine, plus we’re trying to do our portion to help out everyone who’s just trying to survive.”

This year’s band lineup includes local acts Dave and Dave, Foot 5, the Jimmy Sarr Band, the Adams-led Boys Are Mean and Rok Bottomz, a heavy-metal cover band. Hedges is thankful for their continuing support.

“We’ve had these same group of guys supporting us year after year, and then this year, Jimmy Sarr kept asking us if he could join, too,” she said.
