GARY — The death of a Glen Park man found in an alley near his home has been ruled a homicide after an autopsy completed Monday showed he died from a gunshot wound to his shoulder.
Pierre Dennis, 40, was walking his dog one block south of his home when he was apparently shot. A woman on her way home saw his body in the alley in the 3700 block of Tyler Street and called police.
The nature of his wound and the darkness in the alley prevented police at the scene from immediately determining that Dennis had been shot.
Dennis, of the 3600 block of Tyler St., was pronounced dead about 11 p.m.
A few minutes after 10 p.m., police received a call of a struggle or other disturbance at Dennis’ home, then the call from the woman saying she saw someone on the ground in the alley.
Patrolman Julian Bliss arrived and found Dennis unresponsive, but officers there couldn’t determine what caused his condition. A Lake County coroner’s team and Lake County crime laboratory detectives arrived to process the scene.
Meanwhile, police went to Pierre’s home and found the door unlocked.
Pierre is the twelfth homicide of the year. At this time last year the city had recorded 10 violent deaths.
Detective Cpl. James Nielsen is investigating the man’s death. Anyone with information can call him at (219) 881-4754.
