A former Gary woman has pleaded guilty to causing death while operating while intoxicated in a crash that killed a Highland man nearly one year ago.
Maria D. Jimenez, 40, of Bakersfield, Calif., admitted she had a blood alcohol level of .12 percent when she rear-ended a car that had broken down near the Cline Avenue ramp to Interstate 94 in Hammond on May 8. The victim, William Fett, was trying to move his Chevrolet Malibu and had his four-way flashers on when Jimenez crashed her pickup into the car and killed Fett, 55.
Fett’s plea agreement gives defense attorney Greg Stark and deputy prosecutor Michelle Jatkiewicz the opportunity to argue an appropriate sentence in the Indiana Department of Correction. The plea agreement outlines a maximum four-year sentence.
Lake Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr., took the plea agreement under advisement. A sentencing hearing is set for July 17.
