GARY — Officials with one of the nation’s largest truck stop companies said Wednesday they hope soon to hire all the 160 full- and part-time workers for the new TravelCenters of America Petro Stopping Center on Grant Street.

City officials also announced a series of job fairs designed to put Gary people to work at the truck stop, 3001 Grant St. The Petro center is expected to open May 28.

“We hope from those job fairs we’ll hire 100 percent of our people,” said Tom Maren, T.A.’s recruiting manager. “We’re going to serve the Gary community as well as the interstate community, so it’s important we get the best possible employees from the community.”

The city will work with T.A. and WorkOne to host five job fairs at the WorkOne office, 3522 Village Circle, formerly the Village Shopping Center, and the T.A. facility.

Youth and adults will be encouraged to attend the fairs or apply online at www.IndianaCareerConnect.com or www.MyPetrojob.com.

The jobs will range from cashiers to mechanics and managers, as well as employees for the Pizza Hut, Iron Skillet and Taco Bell restaurants and a Verizon Wireless store that will be at the Grant Street site.

T.A. will give “more weight” to Gary residents, Maren said, and the company provides training, including more for skilled positions like managers and shop technicians.

“We train people to death,” Maren said. “If we’ve got them to where they’re at a certain point with their skill levels, we can take them the rest of the way.”

City officials, WorkOne and T.A. have been working on the job fairs for about a month.

“To see someone come in to the city and make dreams turn into plans, and plans turn into reality, this is what it’s all about,” said Robyn Minton, of WorkOne, adding 30 percent of the local branch of the state agency’s investment went into building up Gary.

T.A. operates 250 locations, including five in Northwest Indiana, across 41 states.
