A small fire at Linde Gas Co. in Hammond forced fire officials to close off Michigan Street in the 3900 block Wednesday afternoon as well as part of Cline Avenue.
All streets were reopened by about 5:30 p.m.
Hammond Fire Chief Jeff Smith said officials believe the fire, reported around 2:30 p.m., started at a tank used for welding. Firefighters did not go in at first as the company said it was just two small flames, but crews eventually sprayed water when smoke started to increase.
Smith said it appeared the fire was out about 4:30 p.m. but crews waited nearby as a precaution. He said the roads remained closed until the site was cleared.
“We want to take every precaution so the building doesn’t go up,” he said, adding there was only minor damage.
