GARY — An 18-year-old was found shot to death Wednesday afternoon on a sandy path west of the former Frankie McCullough Girls Academy.

Police found the victim lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to his head about 4:35 p.m. He was later identified as Lance Johnson of the 12100 block of West 17th Street, Gary, the Lake County Coroner’s Office said.

Detectives Cpl. Edward Gonzales and Cpl. James Nielsen are investigating the shooting.

Witnesses saw two young men in school uniforms running in the area shortly after the gunfire, but investigators don’t yet know if they were involved in the homicide. A mo-ped left at the scene could belong to the victim or a suspect, police said.

Investigators searched the area, including the Waldheim Cemetery to the west, for evidence in the homicide, the 13th of the year in Gary.

The victim was not wearing school clothes, but classes had been dismissed for at least an hour when the teen was shot, police said.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call Gonzalez at 881-4750 or Nielsen at 881-4754.
