GARY — Investigators said Thursday the mo-ped found at the scene of Wednesday’s homicide had been reported stolen in Highland.
Lance Johnson, 18, of the 1200 block of West 17th Avenue, was found shot to death near 20th Avenue and Pierce Street, just three blocks from his home. His hand was cut, a news release from the Lake County coroner states, and he had been shot in the head.
Police found a mo-ped near the scene, located on a sandy path between Lincoln Elementary and a vacant school that once housed Frankie McCullough Girls Academy.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two young men, still dressed in school uniforms, running from the area where Johnson’s body was found. Police called for a Lake County K-9 unit to track the area in an effort to locate the two students, but the dog was unable to locate a scent.
Johnson is the 13th homicide of the year in Gary. In 2012, the city had recorded 11 homicides by May 1.
