Nursing, assisted living facility wins approval of Merrillville planners

MERRILLVILLE — A proposed “next generation” skilled nursing and assisted living facility that would include such amenities as a theater, office/business center, sit-down restaurant and bistro received positive reviews Tuesday from the Plan Commission.

Michael Klingl, site development manager for Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Greenberg Farrow, said Mainstreet Property Group LLC, of Carmel, wants to build a 65,000-square-foot single-story building on about 11.3 acres on 93rd Avenue, east of Broadway.

He said the facility would be 75 percent skilled nursing and 25 percent assisted living.

He said there will be 100 rooms, each of which will be large and will resemble hotel rooms.

“This will be a next generation facility with our trademark Mainstreet concept that offers an array of amenities,” Klingl said.

Klingl said the company is also looking to build four to five more facilities in other Northwest Indiana communities and is looking at locations in Crown Point, Hobart, Dyer and Porter County.

“We want locations in the shadow of a hospital. We have Pinnacle and Methodist hospitals,” he said.

Klingl said the facility will employ more than 100 people including nurses, therapists, beauticians and therapists, and about 300 during the construction phase.

Plan Commission President and Councilman Shawn Pettit, D-6th, said he was in favor of the facility, but warned Klingl there may be a problem getting a curb cut on 93rd.

Pettit said one possibility would be to use a curb cut that has already been approved and put it on the lot line with the adjacent strip center.

“We can figure this out to give them access,” Pettit said.

He said this project could jump-start additional construction to the south of 93rd and Broadway.

Mainstreet Property will come back before the Plan Commission next month with a preliminary plan.

In other matters, Twin Acres North LLC received final subdivision approval for three lots in the Prairie Point subdivision, located north of 91st Avenue and east of Taft Street.
