HOBART — Lashawn Davis of Gary left the Art Van Furniture Job Fair at the Hilton Garden Inn on Wednesday feeling optimistic.
“I’m really excited. It looks promising,” said Davis, who has worked at a day care center and in customer service and is hoping to land a clerical job with the Michigan-based furniture retailer.
Art Van Furniture is opening its first Indiana furniture store at the former J.C. Penney Home Store location at Mississippi and U.S. 30 in August.
According to Tiffany Byrd, regional human resources manager for the Chicago area for Art Van, said the private, family-owned company plans to hire about 60 full- and part-time employees for the new store. Positions will include sales, clerical, warehouse, management, customer service and visual merchandising.
Byrd said the job fair was going a bit slower than she expected on its first day.
“There are a few people trickling in and out,” Byrd said.
Still, she said there were some good candidates among those who did come in, plus she plans to extend the job fair into early next week in hopes of attracting more candidates.
She said the fair will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday at the Hilton Garden Inn, 7775 Mississippi St., behind the site where the new store will open.
Applicants fill out an application form and go through a brief interview on site. Byrd said the company will then call candidates it’s interested in.
Byrd said they are looking for people with related experience.
