HOBART — A Merrillville couple seen leaving Walmart with two computers have been charged with felony theft.
Arrest warrants are issued for LaRonn Carey, 25, and Courtney Deming, 22, both of 5452 Maryland St., court records show.
A shopper at Walmart told police she was leaving the store on April 13 and noticed a woman pushing a cart loaded with two computers. The security alarm sounded as the woman walked out at a quicker pace, headed for a car parked nearby. The witness saw a man in the car before they both left the area.
Detective Steve Houck spoke to the owner of the car, who said he sold it to his son, Carey. Deming called police after the incident and claimed she was not a part of the theft, blaming Carey for everything, the probable cause affidavit states.
Police reviewed surveillance video that showed both Deming and Carey placing the Acer computers valued at almost $1,000 in the cart, then Deming leaving the store without stopping to pay for the goods.
