An East Chicago man was charged in Lake Superior Court with failure to stop after an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, pointing a firearm and resisting law enforcement in an incident reported Monday in Hammond.
Shanton Lamont Carprue, 20, of the 4000 block of Catalpa Street, drove up to his ex-girlfriend’s home in the 2900 block of 165th Street with his new girlfriend, Brittany Webb. Webb and Carprue’s ex-girlfriend, Alexandrea Delgado, got into a fight, police said, which ended when her cousins arrived. Delgado said Carprue had sent her a threatening text message.
As Carprue and Webb ran to the car to drive away, Carprue pulled out a handgun and pointed it at her and her sister.
The women told police they heard three or four gunshots.
Officers arrived as a maroon Pontiac was driving east in the alley at a high rate of speed. Carprue refused to stop, court records state, and continued driving north on Kennedy Avenue into East Chicago, where he crashed into another car at 151st Street and Huish Drive. Carprue then got out of the car and ran, leaving an injured Webb in the car. After Webb was extricated from the wreckage, she was taken to St. Catherine Hospital and transferred to Christ Hospital in Illinois, for treatment of a broken pelvis and broken rib.
