A new trial is scheduled to begin Dec. 2 for a man charged with reckless homicide in the death of a Lake County Correctional officer and other felonies in the injury of three other officers.

Lake Superior Court Judge Salvador Vasquez declared a mistrial June 25 when a potential juror in Jason Cozmanoff’s first trial claimed to be an eyewitness to the nighttime crash on March 6, 2012. The defense wanted more time to explore the man’s account.

Vasquez said the man told the bailiff he was incarcerated in the work release program and happened to be looking out the window while waiting on an alcohol class to begin when the crash occurred.

Police interviewed inmates in the program in an effort to identify eyewitnesses to the crash.

Cozmanoff, 43, of Lakes of the Four Seasons, has pleaded not guilty to reckless homicide in the death of Britney Meux, 25, and the serious injury of David Murchek, Delano Scaife and Latasha Johnson.

The four officers were jogging at about 7 p.m. March 6, 2012, along the 2600 block of West 93rd Avenue, north of the Lake County Government Center in Crown Point, when the crash occurred.
