Schererville police and paramedics responded to a hit-and-run accident involving a child Thursday at 81st and Westwood Court.
A boy on a bicycle was struck by a vehicle. Witnesses said the vehicle was an older model mini-van being driven by a white or Hispanic woman, police said.
Witnesses gave conflicting reports of the vehicle’s color ranging from light blue, blue, light green and green to black.
One witness described the driver as wearing a tank top and shorts, and that she got out of the vehicle, spoke with the boy and his friend, and retrieved a piece, or all, of the front bumper. She placed the bumper in her vehicle and left, driving south on Burr Street.
Witnesses said the woman has dark hair and some stated it was in pigtails, some in a ponytail, and some said it was long and straight.
One witness did not see a front license plate, and said the back plate was blue, such as an Indiana passenger plate.
The boy was transported to Methodist Hospitals Southlake campus. No information about the seriousness of his injury was available.
Police recovered from the scene what appeared to be part of a license plate bracket and screw. It was unknown if this was related to the suspect vehicle.
Anyone with information should contact the Schererville Police Department at (219) 322-5000.
