Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Ross Boswell sentenced a Calumet City, Ill., woman to two years on probation for possession of a controlled substance.
Melissa Gail Estrella, 32, who also has used the names Melissa Barnett and Melissa White, admitted she had 17 hydrocodone pills in her possession on Jan. 19, 2012, when she was in the 7300 block of Jarnecks Avenue in Hammond. The site was within 1,000 feet of Frank O’Bannon Elementary School.
Defense attorney John Cantrell noted his client has minimal criminal history and has six children she cares for. Deputy prosecutor Eric Randall argued for a four-year sentence served on probation in light of the fact Estrella had a minor child with her at the time of the crime.
