Teens tied to string of armed robberies in Hessville

Updated: November 12, 2013 6:27AM

HAMMOND — Members of the Regional Stop Team on Wednesday night arrested two Gary teens suspected in a series of recent armed robberies in Hessville.

Lake County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Barbara McConnell said Tavares Tolliver, 17, and Vincent Fayson, 17, are expected to be charged as adults in Lake Superior Court on Friday.

Earlier this week, Chief Brian Miller asked area residents for help solving four similar cell phone robberies that occurred during the weekend. He said the suspects appeared to be teenagers, and all the robberies occurred between 4 and 8 p.m. The thieves used a weapon during the robberies, he said.

Stop Team members were near the Gary-Hammond border about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday when two young people reported they were robbed of their cellphones at gunpoint at 173rd and Grand Avenue.

Gary Patrolmen Donald Briggs and Kevin Campbell located the suspects at Oak Knoll Renaissance apartments, arrested Tolliver and Fayson and recovered a handgun police believe was used in the incident, Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said. Police also found stolen cellphones.

King said the pair may also be tied to similar crimes in East Chicago and Merrillville.
