An East Chicago man has been charged in Lake Superior Court with attempted child molesting, child molesting with a deadly weapon and criminal confinement.

Jarnell Jarvon Lofton, 30, is charged with molesting a 12-year-old girl at the residence of an acquaintance in the 3400 block of Grand Boulevard in East Chicago.

The girl told police at about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 20, while she was staying with a relative, she woke up when Lofton pulled down her pants. She said as she pulled her pants up, Lofton jabbed her in both hands with a steak knife, then held the knife to her throat, threatened to kill her and molested her.

Two of the charges are Class A felonies punishable by 20 to 50 years.

Lofton was charged in 2002 with attempted child molesting and criminal confinement and pleaded guilty to confinement. In March 2003, he was sentenced to 30 months in prison, but in December 2004, under an agreed sentence modification, Lofton withdrew his previous plea agreement and submitted a new plea agreement for battery with the same 30-month sentence.
