GARY — Five-month-old Syrus Morgan remains in critical condition at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital with severe head and brain injuries, police said Thursday evening.
The newborn was flown to Chicago on Tuesday night after his mother, Siarra Morgan, 19, and her boyfriend, Melvin McNair, 27, called for an ambulance because the child was lifeless and his lips were purple.
Emergency room personnel told police Syrus appeared to be the victim of abuse, prompting police to arrest both his mother and McNair.
Child Protective Services had been contacted as well, police said.
Detectives were questioning McNair again on Thursday.
He was home alone with the baby while Siarra Morgan went to the store. McNair said the baby was crying while he played a video game, but then he noticed the baby appeared ill and called Morgan to return to their home in Aetna.
Investigators say they are waiting for additional medical information about the extent of injuries, the time they were inflicted and other information.
Both Morgan and McNair may be released from custody until the investigation is complete, police said.
Anyone with information can call the Violent Crimes Unit at 881-1210 and ask for Detective Cpl. Edward Gonzalez, Daryl Gordon or James Nielsen.
