Nearly 450 runners are already registered to run the inaugural Dawn of the Dunes marathon, half-marathon and 5K on Sunday in Gary.
Although online registration has ended, marathon organizer Tom Taylor said last-minute entrants can still register from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Majestic Star Casino or from 6 to 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Marquette Park Pavilion near the start/finish line. Entry fees for the 5K, half-marathon and marathon are $30, $60 and $125, respectively.
Taylor and Gary officials set a goal of 500 participants for the first year, with an expectation of 500 spectators in the Miller neighborhood.
“Northwest Indiana has an incredible running community,” Taylor said. “There are multiple races every weekend, but we’re happy where we’re at, especially as a first-time event.”
Taylor said runners from across the United States — Maryland to California — will participate, as well as one person from Japan and two from Canada.
The weather forecast is expected to be ideal for runners — temperatures in the low 50s and sunny.
