HIGHLAND — A Hammond woman was killed in an early-afternoon accident on Kennedy Avenue.

The woman was leaving the Highland Post Office branch in the 8500 block of Kennedy Avenue when witnesses said she started driving erratically, said Highland Police Department Public Information Officer Cmdr. George Georgeff.

The car then struck the corner of the J&M Heating and Cooling building and ricocheted into oncoming traffic, heading southbound on Kennedy, where a dump truck collided with the vehicle on the driver’s side.

The Highland Fire Department arrived to extricate the woman. She was pronounced dead at The Community Hospital in Munster. The Lake County coroner’s office identified her as Mary Ann Gigac, 77, of Hammond.

The driver of the truck, whose name has not yet been released, was also taken to Community, but he appeared uninjured, police said. As a commercial driver, though, he would undergo a routine drug test, police said.

Traffic on Kennedy Avenue was rerouted on LaPorte and Franklin streets for much of the afternoon.
