A Gary man was sentenced Tuesday to three years for theft.
Emmanuel Powell of Gary will serve one year in prison, followed by two years in Lake County Community Corrections Kimbrough Work Program, under the penalty handed down by Lake Superior Court Judge Salvador Vasquez.
Emmanuel Powell, 19, and an accomplice stole items including a flat-screen television and handgun on Jan. 29 from a residence in the 300 block of Matthews Street in the Brunswick section of Gary.
Powell has already taken steps to earn his General Equivalency Diploma through classes in the Lake County Jail, defense attorney Sonya Scott-Dix said. Powell also must perform community service as part of his plea agreement.
Deputy prosecutor Christine Parry said the victim had moved out of fear and added that the restitution didn’t cover the cost of the stolen goods.
Powell apologized for his actions.
