EAST CHICAGO

2 arrested after refusing orders to stop loitering

Members of the Regional Stop Team arrested two men who stopped in the middle of the street and refused to move after police told them they couldn’t loiter on the corner of 149th and Northcote streets.

The team members were patrolling the area during trick-or-treat hours and saw a group of people standing on the corner. Gary Patrolmen Donald Briggs and Kevin Campbell told them to keep moving and a woman and two children crossed the street, but Deshaun Bell, 23, and another man, walked into the road and stopped, then just stared at the officers, Gary police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

The officers found that Bell was carrying a handgun and that he had warrants in Gary, Merrillville and Lake County. He was arrested on pending charges of being a felon in possession of a handgun, felony carrying a gun without a license, resisting law enforcement and obstructing traffic, police said.
