Man arrested on Purdue Calumet campus; weapon found in vehicle

HAMMOND — An Oklahoma man could face criminal charges after he was arrested near student housing buildings on the Purdue University Calumet campus Thursday and a weapon was found in his vehicle.

Wes Lukoshus, a Purdue Calumet spokesman, said Christian Miller, of Stillwater, Okla., was apprehended by university police and transferred to Hammond police. A woman who lives on campus had alerted authorities that Miller was in the vicinity.

Lukoshus said Miller, who is not a Purdue student, could be charged with stalking and possession of a firearm, but by midafternoon Friday charges had not been filed.

Miller was taken into custody without incident, and no one on campus was in any danger, according to an email sent to all students from the university.

Police recovered a handgun and two magazines of ammunition in Miller’s vehicle.

“It happened so quickly there was never any threat to anyone on campus,” Lukoshus said. “(The student) felt she was being stalked by her ex-boyfriend, so she called police.”

Federal law requires all colleges and universities to alert all students and employees of any potential threats to their safety.
