An East Chicago woman has been charged in Lake Superior Court with two counts of neglect of a dependent after police responded to a call from a concerned neighbor and found two young children home alone.
Dana L. Crawford, 22, of the 3800 block of Ontario Court, admitted to police she left her children, ages 2 and 3, home alone on Jan. 17. She told police she put them to bed at 8 p.m., and went to a friend’s apartment, where she got to talking and “running her mouth” and lost track of time, the probable cause affidavit states.
A neighbor told police she heard the children making noise, screaming and crying at about 5 p.m., and it continued until 9 p.m. when she heard a piercing scream from the upstairs apartment. She knocked on the door and could tell the children were near the door and apparently trying to get out, but no one answered her knocking.
Police arrived at about 9 p.m. and went inside the apartment, where the children appeared to be in good health and were dressed in T-shirts and shorts, but had soiled and urinated on themselves.
Shortly before 1 a.m., Crawford showed up at the police station. She told police she returned to her apartment at 11 p.m. and found a note from officers.
The charges are punishable by six months to three years.
