A Whiting-based online coupon company is suing 10 unknown competitors it says are gaining an upper hand by stealing its Web-based coupons.
CouponCabin LLC filed the lawsuit Monday in U.S. District Court in Hammond against the anonymous defendants, named for now as “John Does.”
According to the suit, CouponCabin works with more than 5,000 businesses to offer coupons on its site that consumers can access free. The businesses then pay CouponCabin a commission for sending business their way. The company began noticing last year, however, that content from its website, including the coupons, was ending up on competing websites. The lawsuit says an investigation showed someone was using computer programs to scrape all the data from its website and post it elsewhere.
By stealing the coupons, the lawsuit says, the defendants take not only CouponCabin’s web traffic but also its commission. The defendants could also be selling the information to other competitors.
CouponCabin is asking for an injunction against the competitors and unspecified damages and restitution and says it will seek to identify the defendants through their Internet providers.
