SCHERERVILLE — Now that the lights are turned on for some of the stores, some are wondering just when the grand opening will be for the estimated $95 million Shops on Main mall project in Schererville.

“It’s been tough, but the town is ecstatic with the development of the mall,” Schererville Town Attorney David Austgen said. “The winter has been bad, but the developer worked right through it.”

Stores in the mall development across from big box chain store Target include mall anchor Gordmans, Ross Dress for Less, HomeGoods and DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse. A parking lot also has been completed with its own entrance and exit off Main Street and U.S. 41 in Schererville.

“March was the initial opening date for some of the stores, but that has been delayed because of the oftentimes 6 feet of snow in the past few months,” Austgen said. Now, it may be looking more like April, but the mall may create as many as 150 jobs.

According to Regencycenters.com, there are currently 13 tenant vacancies in the 207,328-square-foot property.

HomeGoods has already started hiring in the area and complete its application and on-site interview sessions from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Omni Health & Fitness, 221 U.S. Highway 41, Suite A, Schererville.
