Charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon and battery resulting in serious bodily injury have been filed in Lake Superior Court against an East Chicago man in a Feb. 1 daytime shooting.
Anthony Edward Stewart, 24, of the 3900 block of Catalpa Street, is charged in a shooting that occurred as the victim was riding in a car about 10:20 a.m. near 140th and Deal Street in East Chicago.
Brian Boyd was struck by gunfire in the left side of his lower back. He lost a kidney, sustained a bullet wound in the right diaphragm and had blood in his lungs. He was initially taken to St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and was transferred to Christ Hospital in Illinois in critical condition.
Another passenger in the car said he was sitting behind Boyd, who was in the front passenger seat, when he heard a loud boom.
Everyone in the car ducked, and he saw a man carrying a rifle-type gun shooting at them.
The witness recognized the shooter as someone he recognized and picked Stewart’s photo out of a photo lineup.
The most serious of the charges is punishable by 20 to 50 years.
