Gary police are looking for a large, dark-colored vehicle that struck two boys walking along Vermont Street Saturday night, killing one of them, before fleeing the scene.
According to the Gary Police Department, the two boys were walking in the 4900 block of Vermont between 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. when the vehicle left the roadway and hit both of them.
One of the boys was able to go home and tell his parents, who alerted police to the accident. The other boy, who the Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified as Malik Herron, 13, was taken to Methodist Hospitals Southlake, where he was pronounced dead at 9:56 p.m. He died from blunt force trauma, according to the coroner’s office.
The other boy was treated for injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.
Police believe the vehicle, which fled the scene, has damage to the front passenger side, including the turn signal and mirror. Anyone with information can call Sgt. Dawn Westerfield at 881-7485.
