MERRILLVILLE — Fire investigators said Wednesday a blaze Tuesday at the Hickory Ridge Lake Apartments likely originated near a bathroom ceiling vent fan.
Ross Township Fire Service Deputy Fire Marshal Philip Topor ruled it an accidental fire. The name of the occupant of the apartment where the fire began wasn’t available.
Topor said investigators ruled everything else out as the cause of the fire, except the vent fan.
He said the fire started in the ceiling of a second floor apartment and traveled through the walls.
The fire in the 36-unit building caused more than $1 million in damage and displaced dozen of people.
Firefighters struggled with getting enough water pressure to fight the blaze when they arrived at the private complex at 1718 W. 55th Ave.
Bluestone Properties owns the complex. Officials there haven’t commented on the fire.
