GRIFFITH — The cause of a Friday night fire at a public storage that destroyed one of eight 50-unit storage buildings is under investigation.
Griffith Fire Chief George Thiel said the state fire marshal will be on the scene Monday to investigate the cause the blaze that started in one of the individual storage units at Reserve Storage, 500 E. Ridge Road, in the Ridge Business Park.
“It was just one of those things. Someone probably had something stored in their locker that started to burn. We don’t know what started it,” Thiel said.
Firefighters from Lake Ridge and Highland fire departments assisted Griffith. Firefighters were on scene until 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Thiel said firefighters had to break down the door to each unit and did not know what they would find.
He said one building and its contents are a complete loss. Firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to the other buildings at the site.
“The guys made a good attack on it. With the help of the other two departments they all shared in getting the thing done and getting it taken care of,” Thiel said.
No injuries were reported.
