Robbers take semi up I-65

Updated: January 23, 2012 4:13AM

Three Chicago men attacked a semi driver and stole his truck near Remington on Thursday night, until they were arrested by police on Interstate 65 a short time later.

Tavair McCain, 34; Clarence Magee, 38; and Alfonzo Spraggins, 34, were charged with robbery, criminal confinement, money laundering and resisting arrest with a vehicle.

Around 8:14 p.m., two men reported that they were attacked by three men when they were at the Remington exit off of I-65. One of the victims was handcuffed by the robbers and they were in the process of handcuffing the other man, when he fled to the guard shack at the Auto Parts warehouse on U.S. 24. The victims had to be transported to the Jasper County Hospital for head wounds.

Jasper County officers located the semi turning north on I-65 at exit 201.

The suspects refused to stop despite the use of stop sticks but were arrested without incident farther north, close to the Morocco/Rensselaer exit.

Jasper County Sheriff’s Drug Interdiction Unit located a large amount of wrapped cash inside the semi’s cab. The semi and its trailer were moved to the motor pool lot of the Sheriff’s Department for further investigation.

During an inventory, several large bags containing wrapped and sealed cash were found. A K-9 conducted a narcotics sweep on the bags, which was positive.

Federal Drug Enforcement Agency officers arrived on scene to help with the money seizure.

Jasper County Sheriff Terry Risner commended the quick and professional response by his officers that brought the pursuit to a safe conclusion without injury to officers or the public.
