PORTAGE — The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission added road projects in Schererville and Hammond to its 2040 Comprehensive Regional Plan on Thursday.
A project to increase traffic capacity on Kennedy Avenue, between Main Street and U.S. 30, is set to be complete by 2014 in Schererville. The project will cost $7.7 million to reconstruct and realign Kennedy Avenue, including a new intersection at U.S. 30 and an at-grade rail crossing.
Hammond and the Indiana Department of Transportation are working on a project that will add travel lanes to Gostlin Street/Sheffield Avenue/Chicago Avenue (Indiana 312) between the state line and Calumet Avenue. The Hammond project, which is set to start next spring, will cost $15.5 million to reconstruct the roads and an at-grade rail crossing.
