Park departments have cures for cabin fever
January 24, 2012 3:24PM
Winter reality is here and, despite the fact we had somewhat of a reprieve with unseasonably nice weather through December, it’s now that dreaded time of cabin fever.
Some of the best-kept secrets are the many classes, events, programs and trips offered by our local and county parks. From toddlers to teens, young adults to senior citizens, there’s something for everyone.
So here’s the thing, my friends. Don’t vegetate on that couch all winter. Get out and join an exercise class, create some art, learn a new language or enjoy a play. There’s a parks department close by that will offer endless possibilities.
Here are a few ideas to get you started.
† Do you love pancakes covered with melted butter and sweet maple syrup? Did you ever wonder from where that maple syrup (not that faux, icky stuff) comes?
Lake County (Ind.) Parks and Recreation invites you to Deep River Park, 9410 Old Lincoln Highway, Hobart, in early March to see firsthand how trees are tapped and the sap collected, as did early American Indians who once called Northwest Indiana home.
The day isn’t over until you visit the Sugar Shack to learn how the sap is processed in a wood-fired evaporator. Of course, tasting is arguably the most popular part of this program.
Visit the gift shop when you’re done to take home a bottle of syrup or some delicious maple candy.
Tours will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. March 6-8 and 13-15. Reservations are required and open to children, first grade and older, through adults. The weather can be fickle at that time of year, so dress accordingly for outdoor and indoor activities.
To make a reservation or for more information, call (219) 769-7275. A deposit is required, and the fee is $1 per person.
† The Crete (Ill.) Park District is sponsoring Daddy-Daughter Date Night from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, just in time for Valentine’s Day at Lincolnshire Country Club, 390 E. Richton Road.
The event includes a buffet dinner, dancing courtesy of a deejay, and a special souvenir to remember the night.
Open to all ages, reservations are being taken through Friday, Feb. 3. The cost is $35 for residents or $50 for nonresidents. Call (708) 672-6969 to reserve a place.
† Now that we have snow on the ground, you might note there’s quite a bit of sledding going on at Centennial Park, courtesy of Munster Parks and Recreation.
The designated sled hill is southwest of the grass tees at the driving range and it’s open every day from 9 a.m. to dusk. There’s no cost, but participants are asked to walk on the paths when going to and from the hill so the golf course isn’t damaged.
Don’t forget to warm up afterward with a cup of hot chocolate inside the clubhouse.
† Do you love the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons? The Schererville (Ind.) Parks and Recreation Department is offering a trip to see the hit musical “Jersey Boys” at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago on April 29. The cost is $95 for residents or $99 for nonresidents, which includes transportation by motor coach and tickets. Register online at
www.Schererville.org.
