IUN will explore Freedom Riders

Updated: March 1, 2012 8:09AM

In February, Indiana University Northwest invites the public to another enlightening discussion about the Freedom Riders, in honor of Black History Month.

The campus also offers college-bound students help with financial aid forms and provides inspiration for realizing one’s full potential.

Black History Month: The free program related to the Freedom Rides of 1961 starts at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, in Bergland Auditorium in the Savannah Center.

Eric Etheridge is the author, journalist and photographer behind the recently published “Breach of Peace: Portraits of the 1961 Mississippi Freedom Riders,” a then-and-now memoir of the 328 people who were arrested in Jackson, Miss., for trying to desegregate transportation terminals there. Joining Etheridge will be one of the Freedom Riders, Thomas Armstrong, who wrote “Autobiography of a Freedom Rider: My Life as a Foot Soldier for Civil Rights.”

They will lead an enlightening discussion and multimedia program featuring their personal experiences, photos and book excerpts. A book signing will follow.

For more details, call 980-6596.

‘Learning to Project the Person You Really Are’: The IUN chapter of the National Society of Leadership & Success will air live, via satellite, “Learning to Project the Person You Really Are” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in the Gallery for Contemporary Art in the Savannah Center.

The free event will inspire attendees to realize their full potential. The presenter, Linda Papadopoulos, is one of the most well-known and respected psychologists working in the United Kingdom. She has been published widely in peer-reviewed academic journals in the fields of psychodermatology, body image, counseling and medical psychology. Her most recent book is “What Men Say, What Women Hear.”

College Goal Sunday: Financial aid professionals will help college-bound students and their families understand financial aid during College Goal Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12. The free program will be in Hawthorn Hall, Room 105.

It is designed to help Indiana students who are seeking undergraduate admission to a college or technical school in 2012 in filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is required for students to be considered for federal and state grants, and loans and scholarships at most colleges, universities and vocational-technical schools nationwide. It must be filed by March 10.

To make filing the FAFSA easier, volunteers discuss the form and answer individual questions. A Spanish interpreter will be available, and computers will be set up outside the Office of Admissions for filing FAFSAs online.

Students should attend with their parent(s) or guardian(s) and bring their completed 2011 IRS 1040 tax returns, W-2 forms and other 2011 income and benefits information. Students who worked last year should bring their income information. Students 24 years of age or older may attend alone and bring their completed 2011 IRS 1040 tax return, W-2 form or other 2011 income and benefits information.

Students and parents may apply for their Department of Education personal identification numbers at www.pin.ed.gov before the event.
