A textile artist’s palette of colors greets visitors to a new store in Chesterton, Sew Fun Fabrics. Cotton material of every shade and pattern lines the walls of the home recently purchased by store owner Deb Moffitt.
“I like being in a house. It’s a natural setting where people feel at home,” said Moffitt. “My shop is set up like the color wheel; you don’t have to walk all over the store to find five pieces of red.”
While one area of the room gives the warmth of various red, orange and yellow hues, another section contains cool earth tones of greens and blues. Themed fabrics include music, sports, religious icons, animals, holidays and more.
Samples from available kits hang throughout the store — yin yang scrap bags, potholders, cloth photo frames, placemats and other take-home projects.
Additional items range from small, quilt-themed charms, books, stationery, scissor fobs and notions to a large Tin Lizzy Longarm quilting machine.
Sharon Darnell of Chesterton has been sewing since childhood. She reminisced while perusing the aisles of fabric.
“There’s so many things — colors and patterns. Things that you remember from your mother, your grandmother. Parts of your childhood you liked, parts you didn’t like,” said Darnell. “This is not what I expected. This is all the material I’ve been looking for sundresses for so long, but can’t find anywhere.”
Moffitt earned a degree in interior design from Purdue University. Her background includes coordination of color, texture and fabric.
Joyce Stauffer of Chesterton is creating a lilac-colored baby quilt with appliquéd ducks, footprints, bottles and other images.
“Deb helped me pick out the colors and coordinated it for me. She has expertise and a good eye,” said Stauffer. “I’m looking forward to her classes that she’s going to teach on machine quilting, because I’ve never done this before. I’m glad there’s a quilt store in Chesterton. I don’t have to leave town to pick up fabric or take classes.”
Moffit will be teaching Jelly Bargelly, a three-week class in which participants create a bargello-style quilt from jelly roll strips. Class meets from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. starting Wednesday, Feb. 22.
Beginning quilting, a four-week series, begins Thursday, Feb. 23. Sessions are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Next month, individuals can begin viewing a block-of-the-month demonstration. Later, they can purchase that block kit, which helps spread the cost of quilt-making throughout the course of the year.
Moffit also tutors and intends to host day retreats upon request.
