Scout recruitment: Two Cadette Girl Scout troops for sixth-graders are accepting new members. A troop for Jefferson Middle School students meets from 2:50 to 3:50 p.m. the second and fourth Thursdays each month at the school. A citywide troop meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays. Computer classes: The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Porter County is offering classes to senior citizens and veterans who never have used a computer. The fee is $5 for four classes, which meet at 2 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays at 1005 Campbell St. Call 464-1028 for more information.
Volunteers sought: The United Way of Porter County, 951 Eastport Centre Road, will host an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, to prepare volunteers for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for 2013. Volunteers help those earning $50,000 or less, the elderly and disabled prepare and file taxes for free.
