Mayor volunteers as bell ringer: Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson has volunteered to serve as a bell ringer with the annual Red Kettle Campaign of the Gary/Merrillville Corps of the Salvation Army, 4800 Harrison St. She will serve from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Dec. 20, at the Fresh County Market, 2550 Arthur St.

Hope for the Holidays: The Urban League’s Hope for the Holidays event is being held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Genesis Convention Center, 5th Avenue and Broadway. Recipients must register at the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, 2248 W. 35th Ave. For more information, call 980-1777.

Kids Drop, Parents Shop event: Parents are invited to drop off the kids for an evening of food and fun while parents shop for Christmas from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at the Firefighters Local 359 union hall, 565 Massachusetts St. The Kids Drop, Parents Shop event is for ages 3 and older. Cost is $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Vendor booth opportunities are available.
