Bernard C. Watson Academy for Boys fifth-graders Jacques Williams, Fabian Ousley and Tyrese Kuykendall were perfect little drummer boys during the academy’s Christmas program Dec. 13.
“I’ve played the drums since the third-grade,” Jacques said while steadily tapping his drumsticks together. “I like playing the drums.”
Tyrese said he had a great time being a part of the program.
“It was fun. I am glad the crowd liked it,” he said.
The auditorium was standing-room-only as classmates, staff and proud family members enjoyed the program.
Brenda Spencer took pictures and recorded her sons Keon Por, 10, and Taiquan Spencer, 7, who sang popular Christmas songs and recited poetry.
“I am truly enjoying this. I come every year for the holiday programs. The children have so much fun here. They do a good job at the academy,” she said.
Even some teachers and administrators participated in the program, singing “This Christmas” and “Silent Night” to the delight of the audience.
Watson principal S. Leonard Brown said the program was an example of what is an exciting time of the year.
“We are also excited about the community coming to visit our school and seeing what we represent as a school. Our young men work hard every single day to keep their grades up. They know the meaning of giving without expecting something back,” Brown said.
At one point Brown became emotional as he introduced his mother Lynnell Brown who was in the audience.
“Seeing parents and grandparents in the audience watching their children, it reminded me of my youth. I was in a lot of programs and there was never a time when I looked out and did not see my mother watching me with a smile on her face,” Brown said as his voice broke. “It is important that as parents, to be there for our kids, physically, spiritually, emotionally and financially. We are their foundations. We give them reasons to grow and to succeed.”
