Citizens’ police academy: Friday, Dec. 28, is the deadline to apply for the Indiana University Police Department-Northwest and the Gary Police Department Citizens’ Police Academy. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and live or work in Gary. The program is free. Applicants will undergo a background check and may be asked to sit for a brief interview. MICHIGAN CITY
Talk to a lawyer: The Indiana State Bar Association, the NWI Volunteer Lawyers Inc., the Pro Bono Committee of the First Judicial District and local bar associations will sponsor a free walk-in site from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. 4th St. This program is open to anyone who needs legal help but can’t afford an attorney. Volunteer attorneys will be available to provide referral information. The project, in its 11th year, honors the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dream of access to justice for all.
