Book sale: The Friends of the Gary Public Library hold the year-end book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Woodson Branch, 501 S. Lake St. All items are available on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. DVDs are previously viewed and are sold as is. Books are gently used. Payments must be cash and all sales are final. Call 938-3941 for more information.

Teen reading: The teen winter reading program continues through Saturday, Dec. 29, at the Hammond Public Library, 564 State St. Each book read earns an entry into the drawing for a Best Buy gift card. The drawing is scheduled the first week of January 2013. For more information, call 931-5100.

Polish American Cultural Society: An inaugural meeting for the new Michigan City chapter of the Polish American Cultural Society of Northwest Indiana begins at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013 at the St. Mary’s School building, 11th and Buffalo Streets. Following a beginner’s language session and refreshments, an informal discussion or presentation of Polish history, culture, fine arts or current events is planned.
