Beginners’ genealogy: The Genealogy Department of the Porter County Public Library System is offering a beginners’ workshop from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Portage Branch Library, 2665 Irving St. To register, call 763-1508.

King celebration: A Martin Luther King celebration is planned at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Purdue University Calumet Student Union, 2200 169th St. Speakers will include Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and the mayors of East Chicago, Hammond, Crown Point and Lake Station.

Military Ball: Lew Wallace Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Academy, 415 W. 45th Ave., will host the annual Military Ball on Friday, Feb. 1, at the Genesis Convention Center, 5th Avenue and Broadway. Line-up is at 6:15 p.m. The special guest is Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.
